What Types of Therapy Are Used in Drug Rehab?

There is no one-size-fits-all therapy that can help everyone who needs recovery. Different disorders and different personalities can benefit from an equally sparse variety of treatments.

Let’s examine some of the most common types of drug rehab therapy.

What Types of Therapy Are Used in Drug Rehab

Generally, a psychiatrist and a team of recovery experts will assess the condition of the addict within 72 hours of checking into rehab.

During this evaluation, the team will evaluate a variety of factors such as:

  • The severity of their addiction
  • Treatment history
  • Medical and family history
  • Co-occurring disorders

Once an assessment has been completed the team of recovery experts will then determine which is the best treatment plan for the addict.

There are numerous types of drug rehab therapy that an addict can be assigned to including:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy, and it might be the type of therapy that comes to mind when most people think of the subject.

This form of treatment consists of one-on-one sessions between the therapist and the patient where together they work through the patient’s cognitive problems. This treatment is also one of the most common types of drug rehab therapy for addiction.

Psychotherapy has multiple approaches including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most popular forms of psychotherapy.

This therapy has been extensively researched, demonstrating a high degree of efficacy in treating addictions, anxiety, and depression.

It focuses on the relationship between a patient’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and addresses these to enhance their psychological well-being.

The practice is founded on the principle that our feelings, thoughts, and actions all influence our well-being and therefore work in conjunction with each other.

CBT therapists employ different methods like breathing exercises to unlearn negative behaviors which affect and influence thoughts and actions.

Group Therapy

In this form of psychotherapy addicts explore the underlying causes of their addiction in a safe and supportive environment surrounded by other addicts and led by one or two group therapists.

A group therapy session often helps addicts because they can discuss challenges, share experiences, and learn from one another.

A typical session usually includes six to twelve recovering addicts.

Family Therapy

The goal of family therapy is to ensure the entire family heals together, eliminating potential triggers, traumas, and challenges.

Family therapy helps the entire family recover from the trauma by healing the family together and learning how to manage recovery in a healthy way.

Addicts who receive this form of therapy are more likely to stay sober than those who do not. In addition, their families can have a positive influence on their decision to seek treatment.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Because it’s often used for detox, it’s one of the most common types of drug treatment in rehab.

In medicine-assisted treatment, patients are cleansed of toxins and allowed to begin healing by detoxifying their bodies from alcohol and drugs.

In this treatment, low-risk replacement drugs are administered to mask cravings and diminish withdrawal symptoms.

Medication-assisted treatment is one of the most common types of drug treatment in rehab for patients suffering from alcoholism and other drugs that could cause severe life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

Holistic Therapy

In rehab, holistic therapy is often overlooked, but it plays a vital role in the recovery process.

As part of holistic addiction treatment, all physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of a person’s well-being are taken into consideration.

Holistic treatment addresses the underlying causes of addiction rather than just treating its symptoms.

Examples of holistic types of drug treatment in rehab include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Yoga
  • Equine therapy
  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Nutrition
  • Massages
