Addiction treatment takes many forms, and people from all walks of life can benefit from professional care when a new addiction is developed, the level of care provided in the past was insufficient, or a relapse has happened.
Only you can make a decision to get professional treatment for yourself, so it’s important to recognize under which circumstances might be the best decision for you.Â
What is Addiction Treatment?
Addiction treatment can provide several forms of support and care for someone who is looking to overcome a physical and psychological addiction to drugs and alcohol.
There are several levels of addiction treatment available, including:
- Detox
- Inpatient care/residential care
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient Program
- Outpatient care
Detox is a requirement for all ongoing care and the initial step that helps you get over your withdrawal symptoms associated with addictive substances. This should take place at a qualified detox treatment center or your addiction treatment facility under proper medical supervision.
From there, you can choose which level of care is best given your circumstances, with residential care requiring that you live full-time at the treatment center for a designated time frame ranging from 30 days to 90 days and all other levels of outpatient care providing part-time, full-time, or weekly care while you live at home.Â
In some cases, the most recommended course of action is to move through the levels from top to bottom, but for others, that’s not as feasible, and the addiction doesn’t warrant such a comprehensive approach and instead can be dealt with using one or two other levels of care.Â
Do You Need Addiction Treatment?
There are several situations where you might wonder whether or not you need addiction treatment:
Situation #1
In this situation, you may have developed an addiction but not yet realized it. Perhaps you know in your gut that something’s wrong, and even though you tell yourself that you can quit at any time, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Do you need addiction treatment?
If you are showing signs of addiction and you’ve tried to quit on your own with little success, it’s important that you find the right type of professional care to help you get through your detox and withdrawal and then move on to individualized treatment for the rest of your program.
Situation #2
In this situation, you may have received addiction treatment in the past, but it wasn’t the right match for you.
Do you need addiction treatment here?
This depends on your circumstances. For example:
Karen had a severe addiction to methamphetamines and heroin. Combined with her history of trauma and bipolar disorder, Karen really needed comprehensive support from a residential program, even though she didn’t recognize that at the time.
Unable to take full care of herself on a regular basis, Karen decided to participate in the cheaper outpatient program in her area that only included group therapy sessions once per week. She did a two-day hospital detox and jumped right into the weekly group therapy.
However, in her case, this was absolutely insufficient, and it didn’t meet any of her needs, particularly the underlying causes of her addiction, so yes, someone like Karen needs different treatment, more personalized treatment, more comprehensive treatment.Â
Situation #3
In this situation, you may have struggled with addiction in the past, and now you have relapsed.
Do you need addiction treatment?
That depends on the extent of the relapse. A relapse is a normal part of the recovery process for a chronic condition like addiction, but it represents another opportunity for growth and Improvement rather than a failure.
If, however, you are struggling with that relapse, finding it difficult to immediately move back into your sober life, or you feel you need extra support, it might be time to try another level of care.
